Happy Earth Day!
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year, but we can all do our part every day of the year to make our planet a better place to live for ourselves and future generations. Read on for 10 tips you can start doing today so say thank you to our beautiful planet.
10 Simple Tips for Earth Day and Everyday:
Compost your food scraps - learn more from Vermont’s Department of Environmental Conservation here
Choose organic when you can - see the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists and print this handy shopping guide
Choose locally grown food - farmer’s markets, farm stands, even your local grocery store are all places to look
Eat less meat - join the Meatless Monday Movement or start making meat more of a side dish instead of the main star of your plate
Plant a garden to grow your own produce
Use all edible parts of your food when cooking - for example, add broccoli stalks to stir fry along with the tops instead of scrapping them
Save scraps to make stock - celery stalks, carrot peels, and potato peels freeze easily and can be added to stock later
Use the seeds and roots of your produce to regrow them at home - green onions regrow quickly from the root in a small amount of water
Use up food before it spoils - turn stale bread into croutons or breadcrumbs, sauté wilted spinach or kale, and make fruit compote from bruised berries and other fruits
Actually eat your leftovers - incorporate leftovers into your week’s plan for lunches and dinners instead of letting them sit in the fridge untouched
Here’s to a happier and healthier planet!
